Conditions During Reconstruction
During reconstruction of Alabama, people had to help each other. Instead of money, people used the barter system. Money was very scarce. Also, a U.S federal goverment agency called the Freedmen's Bureau aided distressed freedmen (freed slaves) in 1865- 1872 during the Reconstruction Era of the United States.
Barter System
(left) This is a picture of the barter system. One man is holding a rifle. Another man is holding fur. The rifle is to be traded for the fur. Because there was little money after the war, the barter system took the place of money during this time.
